A Little about Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is French for “fat Tuesday.” Also known in English as Shrove Tuesday, it marks the last day before Lent, a period of fasting in the Christian religious calendar. Mardi Gras is the day before Ash Wednesday, and about forty days before Easter. Its date each year is dependent on the date of Easter, which is dependent on a lunar calendar. As such, Mardi Gras can fall between February 3rd and March 9th, making the 2011 date of March 8 relatively late.

As the last day before a traditional period of fasting, Mardi Gras has become a day of celebration in many cultures. Fatty foods, alcohol, and other things that will be restricted during lent are consumed. This celebration has turned into a huge carnival in many places around the world, perhaps most notably Rio de Janiero, Brazil, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Here’s some Black Friday etymology: The term “Black Friday” for the day after Thanksgiving has been traced to police and reporters in the 1960s in Philadelphia (where the S. Walter Packaging Corp. headquarters is located). It was used to describe the havoc caused by vehicular and pedestrian traffic as people flocked to the city’s shops. By the late 1970s, the term had gained national recognition. With the increased recognition for the term came a new explanation for its meaning: Black Friday represents the day when retailers yearly profits turn from the red (losses) to black (profit).

As consumers turned more and more to the internet for their holiday shopping, businesses noticed that it was the following Monday when they saw a peak in online sales. People returned from their holiday weekends and started shopping for the holidays at their desktops. Shop.org invented the neologism Cyber Monday to reflect this trend.

As these days have become part of the holiday vernacular, companies have begun offering Black Friday sales and online Cyber Monday promotions. A Little about Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born navigator sailing under Spanish flags when his crew spotted land in the (present-day) Bahamas on October 12, 1492 (actually October 21 by modern-day Gregorian calendars). This was the first landfall of a voyage that included visits to Cuba and Hispaniola (the island comprised of Haiti and the Dominican Republic), one of four voyages that Columbus led to the New World.

Columbus’s voyages kicked off a wave of exploration, conquest, exploitation, and colonization of lands in South and North America, first by the Spanish and soon after by other European nations. Columbus’s legacy is mixed, and he is reviled by many descendants of indigenous Americans. His memory is preserved in the name of the United States capital territory (District of Columbia). the capital of South Carolina, Columbia, and many other place names and names of natural features. Elsewhere, he is remembered in the name of the country of Columbia and in public memorials such as the Faro de Colon and Parque Colon (Columbus lighthouse) in the Dominican Republic.

The anniversary of Columbus’s first landfall is celebrated in many countries, including much of LAtin America and Spain. In the United States, Columbus Day was an unofficial remembrance of the explorers voyages at least by 1892, as President Benjamin Harrison called upon citizens to commemorate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of his first New World landing. It was seized upon by Italian Americans as a way to celebrate their history in the Americas. They helped make the the day a state holiday in Colorado beginning in 1905 and a federal holiday instituted by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt beginning in 1937. Although the holiday has received criticism from Native Americans in recent years, it remains an important celebration for Italian Americans and Hispanic groups.
