Leadership, creativity, innovation, and timeliness—all these traits lay at the heart of S. Walter Packaging Company’s foundation and, over 100 years later, still embody the attitude and direction of the company that continues to have a passion for its products and customers.
Founded in 1904, S. Walter Packaging started with humble roots. Simon Walter, a prominent Philadelphia businessman, initially established the company as a simple kraft paper bag and wrapping company. Once Walter acquired a printing plant and added it to the foundation he had set with his paper production company, business had a chance to grow and flourish.
By 1918, S. Walter Packaging had become a corporation with the motivation being that employee shareholding would increase employee interest in the company, and in-turn sparking a rise in productivity and passion in the workplace.
Business continued to grow, and by the late twenties the company had expanded out-of-town, with locations in both York and Allentown. Corporate growth gave way to enlarged warehouses and modern offices, as S. Walter Packaging became the embodiment of free American Enterprise flourishing under the watchful eye of strong management.

Even as the Great Depression came and went, S. Walter Packaging successfully continued to grow under the new ownership of the Wilson family—Valentine L. Wilson, Jr. had taken over the business in 1957, his father, Valentine, Sr. had been a salesman with the company since 1914. Under Val and the Wilson’s, the company added five more paper houses in the sixties and seventies, including two retail packagers, a fast food paper business, and two industrial paper specialists.
Wilson realized that the company must become more than just a company who buys and sells paper—while up until the sixties a paper distributer was just a paper distributor, S. Walter Packaging strove to be more through careful administration, marketing, customer service, order expediting, and general sophistication.

As time went on, the company always looked for avenues to develop and deliver the highest quality products and services possible. Recently, in the advent of “Green” technology and the acknowledgment of its vital uses in today’s world, S. Walter Packaging created our flexible “Bag It. Box It. Green?” program to help preserve natural resources while still staying on the cutting edge of eco-friendly technology and customer service.
Even today, S. Walter Packaging has continued to evolve and stay current in terms of revamping, redesigning, and rethinking brands for retail packaging—something we have been at the forefront of for more than 100 years. From our small-time start at the turn of the 20th century, to our additional distribution facilities in Tampa, Las Vegas, and Toronto, and to the state-of-the-art, 145,000 square-foot Philadelphia building we reside in now, each of our 4,000 plus items all personify the same mentality we had at the start.
