Your retail packaging might look great, but are you using the latest labeling technology for your merchandise? If you haven’t shifted over to using smart labels for your products on store shelves and that are being shipped, you’re missing out on the best technology available for simple and accurate product labeling.

Recent market reports show that smart labels is a growing market, with forecasts that revenue will increase from $4.6 billion to $22.7 billion by fourth quarter of 2026. Why are so many companies making the switch? Here’s what smart packaging does, and how it helps your company:

  • Easily identify and track packages. Smart labels are more sophisticated than traditional bar codes. They use technologies such as Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tags, Quick Response (QR) codes, and RFID tags that have a higher level of tracking. QR codes are easy to read using a simple smart phone with an installed app. The new technology makes it more difficult for your package to get lost in route to the customer.
  • Reduce successful theft. You can put smart labels that use EAS tags on your retail packaging while they’re still sitting on the store shelves. A store clerk needs to deactivate EAS tags during the checkout process, so any stolen items will still have the tag on them, sounding an alarm to alert staff.
  • Add technology by making your labels electronic. Most smart labels aren’t electronic yet, so be one of the first to enter this trend that allows for really sophisticated tracking. Electronic smart labels can tell you where the package is right now, with no need for scanning. This is particularly useful if you sell expensive or delicate merchandise.
