What can small retailers learn from an NBA team?
You may think that your small retailer has little in common with the Golden State Warriors. But let’s look closer at the lessons that can be gleaned from their corporate culture and their commitment to stay connected to fans via technology.
Recently the Golden State Warriors were in the news due to a merchant panel hosted by American Express, where small business owners and entrepreneurs spent time learning about how the team has successfully connected to its fans via technology. Forbes describes some of the practical take-aways from the event:
1. Use of technology to drive sales.
The Warriors promote an app in their arena, which allows fans to order food at their seats, meaning they spend less time away from the game. The team also uses a new “beacon technology” which connects with fans as soon as they enter a certain range of the stadium. The app may alert them to specials in the arena’s store or send them a video welcome from one of the players. Even for smaller retailers, app development is within your reach, as are many other forms of technology to help you keep in touch with your customers.
2. Be strategic in which digital platforms you use. Sometimes less is more.
Focus on fewer areas of technology so that you can really excel there. The panel recommended only using a certain platform if you are able to respond to your customers there within 30 minutes.
3. Understand what your consumer wants.
Gunther Bright of American Express, who led the panel, stated that “a key reason business owners are embracing new technology is that customers are now demanding it.” Expanding on this, Bright said that top customer requests are “mobile payments, mobile app and self-checkout options.” If you can’t give your customers what they want, they will go elsewhere!
4. Culture matters.
Create a positive corporate culture, even when there are only a few employees. Hire those who are optimistic and enthusiastic about your service or product. Teach them to promote your firm in all their interactions with vendors and customers. As you grow, continue this method of keeping everyone on message, no matter their role in the firm.
